I went to the grocery store the other day wearing a black Apple t-shirt that I was given when I took the advanced server course, and the teenage checkout guy asked me if I had a Mac. I smiled and told him I did. “Which one?” he asked.
Since it was the express line I decided not to tell him about my first Mac, a 16MHz Macintosh LC which I tricked out with brilliant 8-bit color and 4MB of RAM for $3,000, or my second, the Sony-built PowerBook 100, Apple’s first decent laptop. It had a 1-bit video card, which gave you any color you wanted as long as it was black or white, and the same processor as the LC.
I also didn’t tell him about all the company Macs I’ve been using since 1984; the Macintosh IIs, Quadras, Performas, PowerMacs, G3s, G4s, iMacs and Intels. I didn’t even tell him about my Newton!
No, I didn’t tell him that I’ve had a Mac since before he was born. I said simply, “MacBook.” He nodded in approval, and said that he was thinking of getting one.
Few things retain their coolness across generations.
